Job Summary

Hawkeye Community College is seeking a full-time, nine-month faculty Emergency Medical Services Instructor (EMS) Instructor / EMT Program Chair to join our team in August 2025. At Hawkeye, in our EMS program, students build a strong foundation of skills and competencies needed to be successful in today’s fast-paced medical environment. Students are guided with support from our faculty which possess both the necessary academic credentials and industry experience within their respective disciplines.

Specifically, as an instructor, you will teach in the EMS program while also being responsible for the overall strategic and operational administration of the program. To accomplish this, you’ll provide classroom lab and simulation-based instruction aligned with the National EMS Education Standards and Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (BEMTS) regulations. Instruction may include days and evenings, and various sites and formats (face-to-face, on-line, labs and clinicals).

In addition to teaching, as the EMT Program Chair, you will manage clinical scheduling, clinical site partnerships, student progress tracking, and compliance documentation. This includes curriculum development, outcomes assessment, and participation in departmental planning and advisory activities. You will play a key role in preparing students for NREMT certification, supporting regional workforce needs, and ensuring program quality through continuous improvement and professional collaboration. Overall, you are providing leadership for student engagement and success, faculty development, academic program accreditation, as well as community engagement and partnerships.

Essential Job Functions

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Works with the faculty team to formulate and maintain curriculum for assigned courses.

  • Uses various instructional modalities as needed.

  • Employs various instructional methods and materials that are appropriate for meeting stated objectives, assessing accomplishments of students on a regular basis, and providing progress reports as requested and required.

  • Maintains cooperative relationships with the Dean, supervisors, students, other faculty, the program’s Advisory Committee, all divisions of the College, prospective employers, and the community.

  • Assists faculty with developing instructional plans and materials.

  • Provides high-quality instruction and leadership to the students in the EMS program(s).

  • Prepares daily instructional plans and materials.

  • Coordinates outreach and admission of new students, monitors instructional needs, and satisfactory academic progress for student success.

  • Directs the assessment, revision, and development of curricula while enhancing the integration of simulation and test prep systems throughout the programs.

  • Ensures compliance with EMS education accreditation bodies and regulatory agencies requirements, including annual program reports, website and published materials, periodic program self-study efforts, and preparation for site visits.

  • Facilitates meetings between department faculty and the EMS Advisory Committee.

  • Participates in campus committees as assigned.

  • Ensure that the program meets all programmatic accreditation standards and complete all accreditation requirements to remain in good standing.

  • Develops and implements a systematic plan for evaluation of the EMS program to include student learning outcomes, program outcomes, role-specific graduate competencies, meeting accreditation standards.

  • Assists with faculty recruitment, orientation, evaluation, and retention.

  • Reviews and manages program resources and assists the Health Sciences Dean with the budget.

  • Observes faculty teaching in conjunction with meeting accreditation standards but not for evaluative purposes as they pertain to employment.

  • Schedules and assigns courses to appropriate faculty members for final review by the Dean.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Unless otherwise approved, regular on campus and/or onsite attendance is considered an essential function of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree.

  • Three years (6000 hours) full-time work experience in Emergency Medical Services.

  • Must have medical or allied health education, training, and experience, including field experience in delivering out-of-hospital emergency care.

  • Possesses a current active National Registry and Iowa Paramedic Certification.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills to positively interact with students, faculty, and staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide array of faculty, staff, students, and the general public in a professional and personable manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service, maintain student confidence, and protect operational integrity.

  • Demonstrated ability to travel to and from clinical sites.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new and current technical skills and ideas

Preferred Qualifications

  • Community college experience

  • Post-secondary teaching

  • EMS Instructor endorsement

  • Bachelor’s Degree

Working Conditions

Teaching assignments may include days, evenings, face-to-face, online, clinical, simulation, lab or hybrid instruction.

Work is performed either in or a combination of an office, classroom or clinical setting using technology. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move frequently during working hours. During the course of the day, interact with students, faculty, staff and healthcare organizations in person, by telephone and computers. Requires frequent driving to and from clinical sites.

Employment Status

Full time nine-month contractual position beginning in August 2025 position with comprehensive or competitive benefits program including health, dental, vision, life, and LTD insurance, a Section 125 plan for medical and dependent care expenses; holiday, personal, sick leave; tuition reimbursement / tuition remission; and a choice of retirement programs—IPERS (defined benefit) or TIAA (defined contribution).

  • Beginning salaries are determined by education and experience based on the Hawkeye Professional Educators’ Association Master Agreement.

  • The current 2025/2026 Academic Year 9-month faculty pay structure consists of 20 steps with Step 1 as $50,625 through Step 20 as $66,914.
